If we classify ethical theories into ‘immanentist’ (those that detect what is ethically acceptable in some type of world events, such as the utilitarian growth of general benefits) and ‘transcendentalist’ (those that locate in some space beyond this world the reason why we should behave ethically – for example, due to some kind of otherworldly reward –), then the moral philosophy of the so-called ‘first’ Wittgenstein would occupy a special place between both extremes of such a dichotomy. To a certain (...)

This review article of the volume Nach der Verurteilung von 1277. Jahrhunderts. Studien und Texte, edited by J.A. Aertsen, K. Emery and A. Speer focuses on three points. First of all, it discusses new developments in the field of enquiry concerning the origin, the meaning and the influence of the condemnation of 1277. Then, it highlights the crisis of the historiographical categories introduced by scholars of the first (...)

Against the Artists. Jun'ichirō Tanizaki and the Man of Art. -/- This essay explores the concepts of "art" (gei) and "man of art" (geinin) in Tanizaki's works. These two notions belong to an ancient Japanese aesthetic tradition. The concept of 'gei' means "realization", "skill", but also "technique" and "ability". Traditional stage performances such as 'nō', 'kyōgen', 'bunraku', 'kabuki', are typical examples of 'gei'. On the other hand the concept of 'geinin' implies three pivotal aspects: 1) a strict and harsh aesthetic (...)

Given its non-invasive nature, there is increasing interest in the use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation across basic, translational and clinical research. Contemporaneously, tVNS can be achieved by stimulating either the auricular branch or the cervical bundle of the vagus nerve, referred to as transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and transcutaneous cervical VNS, respectively. In order to advance the field in a systematic manner, studies using these technologies need to adequately report sufficient methodological detail to enable comparison of results between (...)

    Anti‐inflammatory effects of melatonin in multiple sclerosis.Mauricio F. Farez, Ismael L. Calandri, Jorge Correale & Francisco J. Quintana - 2016 - Bioessays 38 (10):1016-1026.
Melatonin is a hormone with complex roles in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. Over the years, it has become clear that melatonin may exacerbate some autoimmune conditions, whereas it alleviates others such as multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a dysregulated immune response directed against the central nervous system. Indeed, the balance between pathogenic CD4+ T cells secreting IFN‐γ (TH1) or IL‐17 (TH17); and FoxP3+ regulatory T cells and IL‐10+ type 1 regulatory T cells (Tr1 cells) (...)

    Benedetto Varchi e l'averroismo.Luca Bianchi - 2020 - Rivista di Storia Della Filosofia 4:625-651.
Benedetto Varchi and Averroism. The article examines the role played by Averroes and the Averroist tradition in Benedetto Varchi's philosophical works. The first part clarifies why Varchi defines Dante as an "Averroist" and reconstructs his ori- ginal reading of the first verse in Paradise. The second part argues that Varchi's plan to vernacularize philosophy, often interpreted as an attempt to "demo- cratize" knowledge, should not prevent us from recognizing that he emphasizes the moral and intellectual differences existing among human beings. John Langshaw Austin.Federica Berdini & Claudia Bianchi - 2013 - Aphex 7:674-710.

In the seminar XVI, D'un Autre à l'autre, in 1968/1969, Jacques Lacan claimed that there is an homology between the function of object a in the unconscious and the Marxian notion of surplus-value. Both concepts in fact revolve around similar axes: their reluctance to be localized in a certain place of the structure and their connection with the notion of surplus. In Chapter 7 of Das Kapital, Marx seems to imagine a purely mythical pre-capitalist society where production is only devoted (...)
